(current as of February 2012, without having to specify all the parameters of {}. The CMoS most often cited in articles on grammar and style, and in Wikipedia's own WP:Manual of Style.
Multiple American style guides, including The Chicago Manual of Style (since 2010), now deprecate U.S. and recommend US. For commonality reasons, use US by default when abbreviating, but retain U.S. in American or Canadian English articles in which it is already established, unless there is a good reason to change it.

Text formatting in citations should follow, consistently within an article, an established citation style or system. Options include either of Wikipedia's own template-based Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2, and any other well-recognized citation system. Parameters in the citation templates should be accurate.
