The 2021 Haiti earthquake was the largest to strike the country since the 1842 Cap-Haïtien earthquake. More than 138,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, most of them in Les Cayes and Nippes. 2,248 people were killed, 12,763 others were injured and 329 people remained missing. It is the deadliest earthquake of 2021. [338] 2,248 12,763 16 [339]
The earthquake occurred as a result of oblique-reverse faulting on an 80 km (50 mi) section of the Enriquillo–Plantain Garden fault zone, [20] 125 km (78 mi; 67 nmi) west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, consistent with its location and the observed focal mechanism. It had an estimated hypocentral depth of 10.0 km (6.2 mi). [1]
The most recent similar-sized comparable to the 2021 quake was the 6.9 M w 2016 Fukushima earthquake, which occurred just southwest of where the February 2021 earthquake struck. That earthquake was the result of normal faulting within the overriding Okhotsk Sea Plate at a depth of 9 km (5.6 mi). [ 22 ]
The following is a list of significant earthquakes from 2021–2030, listing earthquakes of magnitude 7 and above, or which caused human fatalities. Deaths due to earthquake-caused tsunamis are included.

At the location of this event, the Pacific plate converges with North America to the northwest at a rate of about 64 mm/yr, subducting at the Alaska-Aleutians trench ~125 km to the southeast of the earthquake. The earthquake was initially reported as having a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 before being upgraded to 8.2. [48]
The 2021 Assam earthquake struck 11 km (7 miles) away from Dhekiajuli, Assam, India at 07:51 on April 28, 2021 with a moment magnitude of 6.0 at 34.0 km (21.1 mi) depth. [2] [3] The quake struck with an epicenter 140 km (86 miles) north of the main city of Guwahati. It resulted in two fatalities and at least 12 injuries.
An earthquake measuring a magnitude of 7.0 struck the same location on January 21, 2021. Despite the location, there is no evidence of a casual relationship between these two events due to the long period of time between them.
