Buddleja davidii (spelling variant Buddleia davidii), also called summer lilac, butterfly-bush, or orange eye, is a species of flowering plant in the family Scrophulariaceae, native to Sichuan and Hubei provinces in central China, and also Japan. [1]
Buddleja species, especially Buddleja davidii and interspecific hybrids, are commonly known as butterfly bushes and are frequently cultivated as garden shrubs. [5] Buddleja davidii has become an invasive species in both Europe and North America.
Buddleja alternifolia, known as alternate-leaved butterfly-bush, [1] is a species of flowering plant in the figwort family, which is endemic to Gansu, China.A substantial deciduous shrub growing to 4 metres (13 ft) tall and wide, it bears grey-green leaves and graceful pendent racemes of scented lilac flowers in summer.
It is a deciduous shrub growing to a height of 2–4 m. The leaves are elliptic-acute, 6–12 cm long, with a finely hairy margin. The flowers are dark pink, with a tubular base to the corolla 15 mm long with a narrow four-lobed apex 3–4 mm across, with a strong fragrance; they are produced in slender panicles up to 15 cm long in early summer.
Summer lilac most commonly refers to Buddleja davidii, a widely cultivated ornamental shrub also known as the butterfly bush. It may also refer to: Other Buddleja species and cultivars; Hesperis matronalis, a herbaceous plant also known as dame's rocket and sweet rocket; A Hemerocallis interspecies hybrid, the summer lilac daylily
The usual flower colour is a shade of purple (often a light purple or "lilac"), but white, pale yellow and pink, and even a dark burgundy color are also found. The flowers grow in large panicles, and in several species have a strong fragrance. Flowering varies between mid spring to early summer, depending on the species.
