The company was founded by Daniel and Margaret Duckhorn as The St. Helena Wine Company in 1976 with eight co-investors. [3] His background was in business and finance – he had consulted for the wine and spirits company Heublein and had managed a Napa Valley vine grafting and root stock business that supplied vines to vineyard owners, which brought him into contact with Napa Valley winemakers.
Founded in 1977 by English businessman Peter Newton and his Chinese wife Su Hua, Newton was the first newly-developed vineyard on Spring Mountain in California's Napa Valley. The Newtons transformed one square mile of entirely undeveloped rolling hillside into one of Napa Valley's leading estates. [1]
Napa County wine refers to the viticulture and winemaking in Napa County, California, United States. Merlot (/ ˈ m ɜːr l oʊ / MUR-loh) is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape.
The first bottling under the Blackbird Vineyard label was a 2003 Merlot, made by Sarah Gott. [5] They produced 90 cases that vintage and it was only sold to private buyers. [2] [5] While the estate vineyard produces only Merlot, Blackbird Vineyards also sources Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon for blending. [2]
Foster Road Vineyard (31.5 vineyard acres) is located on the northern edge of Carneros at the foot of the Napa Valley. The vineyard was planted in 1995, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, and 2005. [9]
