Abandoned cemeteries are managed by the municipalities they are located in. In some cases where graves are no longer found or missing markers are added to identify their previous usage.

York County was created on 16 June 1792 [1] and was part of the jurisdiction of the Home District of Upper Canada. It originally comprised all of what is now the City of Toronto, the regional municipalities of Halton, Peel, and York as well as portions of the Regional Municipality of Durham, and the City of Hamilton.

The site of York Cemetery was originally a property farmed by Joseph Shepard, who bought the land in 1805. [1] The brick farm house on the property was constructed in 1837 by Joseph's son, Michael. Prior to the 1940s, the land was also used as the short-lived Willowdale Airfield .
