The sonata's name derives from Beethoven's dedication to his close friend and patron Count Ferdinand Ernst Gabriel von Waldstein, member of Bohemian noble Waldstein family (Valdštejn). It is the only work that Beethoven dedicated to him. [1]

The musical ideas are individualized in this sonata, where the strongest emotions are expressed. In the conception of the time, the key of F minor is perceived as severe and passionate, and Beethoven would return to this character later, especially in the Sonatas Op. 2 No. 1 and Op. 57.
Artur Schnabel, 1906. Austrian pianist Artur Schnabel was the first pianist to record all of Ludwig van Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. [1] The recordings were made in Abbey Road Studios in London on a C. Bechstein grand piano [2] from 1932 to 1935, [3] [4] [5] seven years after electrical recording was invented. [4]

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 22 in F major, Op. 54, was written in 1804. It is contemporary to the first sketches of the Symphony No. 5 in C Minor. It is one of Beethoven's lesser known sonatas, overshadowed by its widely known neighbours, the Waldstein and the Appassionata. [citation needed]
