Center Branch Wildlife Management Area is located on 975 acres (395 ha) in Harrison County near Stonewood, West Virginia. [2] The WMA is located on a former strip mine site, and contains several flat benches and high walls. Second growth oak-hickory and mixed hardwoods forests cover much of the land.
Public state land gives hunters without private land a chance to get out and find animals during hunting seasons.
The land was acquired in 2014. [2] Access to the Fairfax Pond – Rehe WMA can be gained from West Virginia Route 92 on Arthur Road (County Route 92/1) and Dogtown Road (County Route 56/2). Primary species for hunting include deer, wild turkey, waterfowl and grouse. Trapping for beaver, muskrat, raccoon and bobcat is available on the area.
In January 2008, The Nature Conservancy and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources announced they had acquired 4,584 acres (1,855 ha) of land adjacent to New River Gorge from Mountain Top Management, Inc. [3] The land, which borders the Gorge for 4.5 miles (7.2 km), was purchased by the Nature Conservancy for $1,000 an acre [4] and leased to the Division of Natural Resources.
Wildlife Resources Section, WV Division of Natural Resources Pleasant Creek Wildlife Management Area is located near Philippi, West Virginia in Barbour and Taylor counties. Located on 3,030 acres (1,230 ha) land that varies from wetlands to steeply forested woodlands, the Pleasant Creek WMA rises to an elevation of 1,600 feet (490 m).
Frozen Camp Wildlife Management Area is located on 2,587 acres (1,047 ha) in Jackson County near Ripley, West Virginia. [2] The hilly terrain is mostly covered with second-growth mixed hardwoods , with some open creek bottoms and ridgetops.
The wildlife management area is operated by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section to provide hunting and fishing opportunities to the public and to protect the natural resources of the land. The land is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and leased to WVDNR.
