McKinley Heights is a historic conservation neighborhood located in the near South Side of the City of St. Louis. It was rated as a Top 10 Neighborhood for young adults in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The neighborhood is bounded by I-44 to the north, Jefferson Avenue to the west, and I-55 and Gravois Boulevard to the east and south.
Spring Hill Township was formed in 1771 when the area was part of Bedford County. It contained all of what is now Greene County, part of Washington County and nearly all of Fayette County. [4] When Westmoreland County was formed from Bedford County in 1773 Springhill Township was one of its eight original townships. [5]
The Spring Hill neighborhood (excluding Spring Garden) declined to 4,900 in 1974 [3] and then to 2,900 in 2010. [5] Neighborhood residents have been active for decades through the Spring Hill Civic League, which was first organized to oppose the public housing project in nearby Northview Heights and has remained active ever since. By 1940, Spring Hill had a population of 140, a consolidated school district, and a number of businesses. By 1984, the population stood at 1,458 due in part to development in nearby Longview. Spring Hill was annexed to Longview on October 7, 1983. [2] Spring Hill still retains its own school district, the Spring Hill Independent School District.
