The Tampa Bay area is a major metropolitan area surrounding Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast of Florida in the United States. It includes the main cities of Tampa , St. Petersburg , and Clearwater . It is the 17th-largest metropolitan area in the United States, with a population of 3,175,275 as of the 2020 U.S. census .
The topographical causeway is broken by two elevated spans that allow watercraft access to and from Old Tampa Bay. There are two beaches along the Causeway: the Ben T. Davis Municipal Beach, maintained by the City of Tampa at the east end, and an unnamed beach owned by the Florida Department of Transportation on the west end.
St. Pete Beach (formerly called St. Petersburg Beach) is a coastal city in Pinellas County, Florida. Known as a tourist destination, St. Pete Beach was formed from the towns of Pass-a-Grille, Belle Vista, St. Petersburg Beach, and unincorporated Pinellas County. It is part of the Tampa Bay area. The population was 8,879 at the 2020 census.

The lower southern end (Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus County) are often considered part of the Tampa Bay Area. [8] [9] Activities common in this area include hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching and nature hiking. Snorkeling spots are found in the rivers along the Nature Coast.
A map dated 1695 identifies the area as Bahia Tampa. [38] Later maps dated 1794 [39] and 1800 [40] show the bay divided with three different names, Tampa Bay west of the Interbay peninsula and Hillsboro Bay on the east with an overall name of Bay of Spiritu Santo. At other times, the entire bay was identified as The Bay of Tocobaga. [41]
Honeymoon Island State Park is a Florida State Park located on Honeymoon Island, a barrier island across St. Joseph Sound from Dunedin, Palm Harbor, Ozona, and Crystal Beach. The park is 385 acres (1.6 km 2) in land area with 2,400 acres (10 km 2) submerged and 4 miles (6 km) of beach.
