In 1914, Glenkinchie joined Rosebank, St Magdalene, Grange and Clydesdale to form Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) and in 1925 SMD merged with The Distillers Company (DCL). [5] In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky. [6] Guinness acquired The Distillers Company in 1986. [7]
Glenkinchie Distillery (2005) As a region, the Lowlands have been more strongly associated with grain whisky and blended whisky than malt whisky. Glen Albyn distillery was founded in 1897 by the Dundee wine merchant James Isle as Highland Esk distillery having been converted from a flax mill. [1] In 1899, JF Caille took over the distillery and renamed it North Esk distillery. [2] The distillery was closed during the First World War but reopened afterward. [3]
