On the above four terminologies for the classes of sound synthesis methods — i.e., (1) Wavetable synthesis, (2) Wavetable-modification algorithm, (3) Multiple wavetable synthesis, and (4) Sample-based synthesis — if these had been appropriately used to distinguish each other, any confusions could be avoided, but it seems failed historically.
Frequency modulation synthesis (or FM synthesis) is a form of sound synthesis whereby the frequency of a waveform is changed by modulating its frequency with a modulator. The (instantaneous) frequency of an oscillator is altered in accordance with the amplitude of a modulating signal. [1] FM synthesis can create both harmonic and inharmonic sounds.
The Yamaha YMF278 or YMF278B, also known as the OPL4 (OPL is an acronym for FM Operator Type-L), is a sound chip that incorporates both FM synthesis and sample-based synthesis (often incorrectly called "wavetable synthesis") by Yamaha.
It consists of low-cost sound chips providing FM synthesis for use in computing, music and video game applications. The OPL series of chips enabled the creation of affordable sound cards for IBM PC compatibles in the late 1980s such the AdLib and Sound Blaster , effectively becoming a de-facto standard until they were supplanted by " wavetable ...
John M. Chowning (/ ˈ tʃ aʊ n ɪ ŋ /; born August 22, 1934, in Salem, New Jersey) is an American composer, musician, discoverer, and professor best known for his work at Stanford University, the founding of CCRMA – Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics in 1975 and his development of the digital implementation of FM synthesis and the digital sound spatialization while there.
FM synthesis is characterized as "harsh", "glassy" and "chilly". [3] Phase distortion synthesis, implemented in Casio CZ synthesizers, is similar to FM synthesis. [61] In wavetable synthesis, synthesizers modulate smoothly between digital representations of different waveforms, changing the shape and timbre. [62]
The Prophet VS most certainly does wavetable synthesis. If the two coordinates of the vector went into some other kind of synthesis engine, say they were FM synthesis parameters, then it wouldn't be wavetable synthesis. But the VS is using these two parameters to control the mix of 4 wavetables. 72.92.135.233 04:54, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
Schematic diagram of additive synthesis. The inputs to the oscillators are frequencies and amplitudes .. Harmonic additive synthesis is closely related to the concept of a Fourier series which is a way of expressing a periodic function as the sum of sinusoidal functions with frequencies equal to integer multiples of a common fundamental frequency.
