Sullivan is located south of the center of Moultrie County. Illinois Routes 32 and 121 pass through the city center. IL 121 leads northwest 28 miles (45 km) to Decatur and southeast 17 miles (27 km) to Mattoon, while IL 32 leads north 9 miles (14 km) to Lovington and south 11 miles (18 km) to Windsor.

[3] The name is pronounced as in "mole tree", unlike the pronunciation of its namesake, the South Carolinian Revolutionary War hero William Moultrie.

The theater began an educational outreach program in 1997, in response to a request from the City of Sullivan Civic Center. The program was originally used to teach jazz, tap, and ballet classes. In 2000, drama and vocal performance classes were added. In 2012, voice lessons were added.
