Brahms' antiquarian interests, his studies of music from the Renaissance to the Classical periods, show in his work — he edited and helped publish a two-chorus motet by Mozart Venite Populi, he had a collection of sonatas by Scarlatti — and in his composition, his motets Op. 74, his interest in the fugue and the passacaglia (outside of organ music such as Josef Rheinberger's Sonata No. 8 ...
A cello sonata is piece written sonata form, often with the instrumentation of a cello taking solo role with piano accompaniment. The Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25, was composed by Johannes Brahms between 1856 and 1861. It was premiered in 1861 in Hamburg , with Clara Schumann at the piano. It was also played in Vienna on 16 November 1862, with Brahms himself at the piano supported by members of the Hellmesberger Quartet . [ 1 ]
The first movement is in conventional sonata form with a repeated exposition. The opening of the first theme resembles the opening of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata. [1] [2] The second movement is a theme and variations inspired by the song Verstohlen geht der Mond auf. Brahms was to rewrite it for female chorus in 1859 (WoO 38/20).
The sonata is structured in three movements: Allegro maestoso ma appassionato; Adagio con gran affetto – Più mosso assai; Finale / Allegro (un poco scherzando) The sonata shares characteristics with the works in the genre by Johannes Brahms, in harmony, rhythm, figuration, a rich piano part and passionate cello lines. [3]
This movement is in a long-lined sonata form, opening with solo cello over chords in the piano, a melody that gains and loses in intensity and dynamics, and then passes to the piano, where the same general curve is followed without the same notes; the breadth and lyrical quality of this passage are characteristic of much of the movement.
