South Yarmouth is located in the southeastern quarter of the town of Yarmouth at (41.667908, -70.199774 It is bordered by the CDP of West Yarmouth to the west and West Dennis to the east. U.S. Route 6 , the Mid-Cape Highway, is to the north, beyond which is the CDP of Yarmouth Port .
Yarmouth (/ ˈ j ɑːr m ə θ / YAR-məth) is a town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, United States, on Cape Cod. The population was 25,023 at the 2020 census . The town is made up of three major villages: South Yarmouth , West Yarmouth , and Yarmouth Port .
The South Yarmouth/Bass River Historic District is a historic district in the southeastern part of Yarmouth, Massachusetts. It encompasses a predominantly residential area centered on a portion of Old Main Street and South Street between the villages of South Yarmouth and Bass River .
After the marina, the river goes under the Route 28 bridge and winds five more miles deep into the cape. Bass River was once considered a viable location for a canal traversing Cape Cod, and is the largest river the Mid-Cape Highway spans. Bass River is home to a friendly rivalry between West Dennis Yacht Club and the Bass River Yacht Club.
U.S. Route 6, the Mid-Cape Highway, is to the south, beyond which are the CDPs of South Yarmouth and West Yarmouth. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Yarmouth Port CDP has a total area of 6.47 square miles (16.76 km 2), of which 6.04 square miles (15.65 km 2) is land, and 0.43 square miles (1.11 km 2) (6.86%) is water. Stretching along Massachusetts Route 6A from the Barnstable line in the west to White Brook in the east, the district includes almost 300 buildings on 50 acres (20 ha). It includes the two villages of Yarmouth Center and Yarmouthport, which were important 18th and 19th century centers of civic and economic activity. [2]
