As customary, the Cyrillic script has a stiffer structure, but both letters have common roots in historical cursive forms of the Greek letter zeta Ζ ζ . [ citation needed ] However, Latin ezh and Cyrillic ze represent different phonemes: the former generally represents /ʒ/ , while the latter represents /z/.
The cursive forms approached the style of lowercase letter forms, with ascenders and descenders, as well as many connecting lines and ligatures between letters. In the 9th and 10th centuries, uncial book hands were replaced with a new, more compact writing style, with letter forms partly adapted from the earlier cursive. [57]

Ze is derived from the Greek letter Zeta (Ζ ζ). In the Early Cyrillic alphabet its name was землꙗ (zemlja), meaning "earth". The shape of the letter originally looked similar to a Greek letter Ζ or Latin letter Z with a tail on the bottom (ꙁ).
