The county seat is Ithaca, [3] although its most populous city is Alma. Gratiot County comprises the Alma, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Mount Pleasant-Alma, MI Combined Statistical Area. The Gratiot County Courthouse was designed in the classical revival style by Claire Allen, a prominent southern Michigan architect.
A two-story log cabin, built by local settler John Jeffrey that same year, was used as the first courthouse. The following year, "Gratiot Center" was renamed "Ithaca," as it remains today. [3] An additional office building was constructed in 1861, and in 1870 the original courthouse was replaced with a 36-by-60-foot (11 m × 18 m) frame structure.

The Ithaca Downtown Historic District is a commercial historic district located on East Center Street, between Main and Pine River, in Ithaca, Michigan (covering 100-168 and 101-161 East Center Street). [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. [1]

Gratiot Center was the name of its first post office, granted on November 16, 1855 with John Knight as the first postmaster. In 1856 the site was named as the county seat of Gratiot County. The settlement's name was changed on April 13, 1857 to Ithaca, after Ithaca, New York. Ithaca was incorporated as a village in 1869 and became a city in 1961.
Robert H. Treman State Park is located along State Route 327, just west of state routes 13, 34, and 96. The park offers an outdoor swimming area at the base of a waterfall, picnic tables, playing fields, hiking and camping. The park has numerous waterfalls along a 4.5-mile (7.2 km) round-trip hike.
