German Doctors e.V. was founded in 1983 as „Ärzte für die dritte Welt“ in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The idea was to create a charity organisation with German doctors, who work without remuneration in the third world countries. The doctors use their annual vacation to work for the project.

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (NASHIP) or "Kassenärztliche Bundesvereinigung (KBV)", based in Berlin, is the co-ordinating body of all 17 State Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Germany. As of 2018, it represented about 175,000 office-based physicians' and psychotherapists.
