The Lansing area would be part of the Diocese of Detroit, followed by the Archdiocese of Detroit, for the next 104 years. The first Catholic church in Flint, St. Michael's, was dedicated in 1848. [3] In 1864, St. Mary Church opened in Lansing, the first Catholic church in that city. The present St. Mary Cathedral was constructed in 1913.
At the same time, Resurrection High School was closed and Monsignor John A. Gabriels High School was opened at the corner of W. Saginaw and Marshall St. Due to financial struggles, the two schools were consolidated in 1970 on the Gabriels campus and the school was renamed Lansing Catholic Central High School.
St. Mary Church is a Gothic Style church constructed across the street from the original brick church. The church was blessed and held its first mass on May 28, 1962. Built from 1959 to 1962, the church was created with Indiana split face stone, sand stone trim, and slate roofing. The bell tower rises to 98 feet (30 m).
