Nagy Brothers Shoe Repair is a historic building in the Hungarian Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. The one-story structure was built in 1932 in a vernacular commercial style. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The building was historically used as a shoe repair shop and gas station.
The 120,000 sq ft (11,000 m 2) L-shaped building was constructed in two portions: the southern portion in 1921 along West Main St. and the eastern portion in 1932, extending north along Wall St. The building was the manufacturing plant of the Julian and Kokenge Co., a shoe company founded in Cincinnati in 1893.
The two Front Street buildings were designed to look nearly identical, both with white Georgia marble facades, matching the marble exterior of the Ohio Judicial Center. [1] [2] The exteriors at the Front Street level and below have precast exposed aggregate concrete panels. Mechanical penthouses on the roofs contain air conditioning equipment.
A grocery store where over twelve languages were spoken and residents walked to is located at the edge of Hungarian Village, just down the street from the Hungarian Reformed Church in a concrete building. The grocery store is no longer there, but the building remains with a market now occupying that space. [11] [12]
