On February 20, 1796, Lincoln County was established as the twenty-fourth county in the state of Georgia. Before then, its territory was part of Wilkes County, now on its western side. The new county was named after General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810), a Revolutionary War hero notable for receiving Gen. Cornwallis's sword at Yorktown, Virginia.
It lies at the intersection of State Routes 44 and 79, to the northwest of the city of Lincolnton, the county seat of Lincoln County. [1] Its elevation is 466 feet (142 m), and it is located at 33°54′27″N 82°36′07″W / 33.90750°N 82.60194°W / 33.90750; -82.60194 (33.9076218, -82.6020786
SR 79 begins at an intersection with US 378/SR 43 (McCormick Highway) northeast of Lincolnton approximately 450 feet west of the intersection of US 378/SR 43 and SR 43 Conn, within the central part of Lincoln County. The road is known as New Petersburg Road. The highway travels to the north-northwest.
The Lincoln County Courthouse, on Courthouse Sq. in Lincolnton, Georgia, was built in 1915. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1] It has a Doric tetrastyle projecting two-story portico with entablatures and a heavy cornice. It is topped by domed clock tower, which rises in the center of the building.
State Route 44 (SR 44) is a 94.2-mile-long (151.6 km) state highway that runs southwest-to-northeast through portions of Jones, Putnam, Greene, Taliaferro, Wilkes, and Lincoln counties in the central and east-central parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects Gray with the central portion of Lincoln County, northwest of Lincolnton.
