Spaniards Inn in 1906 Garden of the Spaniard's Inn on a sunny lunchtime. The Spaniards Inn is a historic pub on Spaniards Road between Hampstead and Highgate in London, England. It lies on the edge of Hampstead Heath near Kenwood House. It is a Grade II listed building, dating back to the 16th century. [1]
The Cochrane Inn. Gatehead is most likely to have been named after the Turnpike road and the toll bar or gate. A 'Gatehead Toll Bar' is still marked nearby on the road to Laigh Milton mill and the Craig House estate as late as 1860 on the Ordnance Survey (OS) map of that year.
The Pack Horse Inn was nearby. In 1753 a new bridge was built over Steeton Beck. [3] The first toll gate was set up in 1753 at "Steeton Cross" at the foot of the hill. In 1782 when the new road under Hawkcliffe was made, the toll-bar was removed to "Old Bar-house" to intercept traffic by Old Bar-house Lane and the new road. [5]

The pub started out as a country inn, located just by a toll-gate which stood at the top of Bolton Lane. Visitors to Ipswich were charged a toll for their carriages and carts. However, many farmers avoided the fee by stabling their horses at the stables provided by the Woolpack, with their vehicles parked in Westerfield or Tuddenham Road. [3]
