Portree (/ p ɔːr ˈ t r iː /; Scottish Gaelic: Port Rìgh, pronounced [pʰɔrˠʃt̪ˈɾiː]) is the capital [2] and largest town of the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The name is thought to be derived from Old Norse vík, which means bay [3] or inlet. Borrowed via Germanic intermediary *wīkō ('harbour town') from Latin vīcus (Classical Latin: [ˈu̯iːkʊs̠], 'village'), Uig shares etymological roots with placenames such as Wick, Highland; Vik, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway; Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland; the suffix -wich, and the word village itself.
Although only 4 km (2 + 1 ⁄ 2 mi) southwest of Portree, the island of Skye's main town, Mugeary is about double this distance away by road. There is a track across the Bealach Mòr (English: big pass) to the north of Stròc-bheinn which leads to the forestry plantation above the main A87 road south of Portree. [2]
