Her father was Husayn ibn Ali (d. 680), the third Shia Imam and the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (d. 632). Sakina was born to the first wife of Husayn, Rubab, who was the daughter of Imra' al-Qays ibn Adi, a chief of the Banu Kalb tribe. [3]
Husayn and a small group of his supporters were massacred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE on the order of the Umayyad caliph Yazid (r. 680–683 ).
