"Follow On", also known in certain cases as "Down In The Valley With My Saviour I Would Go" [1] and "I Will Follow Jesus", is a Christian hymn written in 1878 by William Orcutt Cushing. [2] The music for it was composed in 1880 by both Robert Lowry and W. Howard Doane .
This article refers to the English version. The book was published on the 150th anniversary of the publication of the first LDS hymnbook, compiled by Emma Smith in 1835. Previous hymnbooks used by the church include The Manchester Hymnal (1840), The Psalmody (1889), Songs of Zion (1908), Hymns (1927), and Hymns (1948).
The following lists contains all the hymns composed by Sankey that are found in the "1200" edition of Sacred Songs and Solos. Many of these hymns are also found in the six-volume collection, Gospel Hymns and Sacred Songs, which Sankey edited with Philip Bliss and others, which was published in the United States between 1876 and 1891. In 1927, the church's Music Committee decided to combine the best of the first three of these hymnals into one volume. The result was called Latter-day Saint Hymns, though it was commonly called "the green hymnbook". It contained 419 hymns, of which 128 still survive in the church's 1985 hymnal.
In the 20th century, it was included in the Baptist Hymnal (1956, and subsequent editions), Hymns for the Living Church (1974), Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal (1985), and New Redemption Hymnal (1986), among others. [1] In 1910, the hymn was also published in a German translation, "Aug in Auge vor ihm stehen", in Evangeliums-Sänger. [1]
Robert Lowry (March 12, 1826 – 25 November 1899) was an American preacher who became a popular writer of gospel music in the mid-to-late 19th century. His best-known hymns include "Shall We Gather at the River", "Christ Arose!", "How Can I Keep from Singing?" and "Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus".
