Sandown Bay is a broad open bay which stretches for much of the length of the Isle of Wight's southeastern coast. It extends 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles (13.7 km) from Culver Down, near Yaverland in the northeast of the Island, to just south of Shanklin, near the village of Luccombe in the southwest. [1]
A rowing club in Sandown also existed from c.1900 until World War II. [4] In December 1954 at a meeting at the Grange Hotel, the club reformed as a merger of Shanklin and Sandown. [5] A new boathouse was built on Osborne Beach the following year and remained as the club's base until 1975, when the present stone clubhouse was constructed nearby. [3]

Shanklin is the southernmost of three settlements which occupy the bay, and is close to Lake and Sandown. The sandy beach, its Old Village and a wooded ravine, Shanklin Chine, are its main attractions.

Lake is a seaside village situated above the cliffs on Sandown bay, it stands at an elevation of 63 feet (19 m) above sea-level. [5] Lake's beach or 'Welcome Beach' has golden sands and reached by a steep path down the sandstone cliffs to the Revetment. [6] It has two cafes (Hinks and Strollers), beach huts, a Sea Scout hut and inshore lifeboat.
Whitecliff Bay is a sandy bay near Foreland which is the easternmost point of the Isle of Wight, England, about two miles south-west of Bembridge and just to the north of Culver Down. The bay has a shoreline of around three-quarters of a mile (1.2 km) and has a popular sandy shingle beach which is over half a mile long. [1]
