Triac failures are usually caused by either excess current or excess voltage, either to the gate or through the device, and if they happen at the moment of turn on application it is most likely not overheating. An evaluation of the actual circuit may lead to an understanding of the cause.

If using a Triac controller I would use a burst firing method rather than phase angle control, many 1ph motors do not take to phase angle control once you get above 1/2 HP. Burst firing turns the triac on full but for gradually increasing time on periods until full on is reached.
The triac doesn't care whether it is switching AC or DC. Assuming that all other specs are okay for your application, then yes, you can certainly switch a DC voltage on/off.
