A caption is a short descriptive or explanatory text, usually one or two sentences long, which accompanies a photograph, picture, map, graph, pictorial illustration, figure, table or some other form of graphic content contained in a book or in a newspaper or magazine article. The text of captions should not be specially formatted (with italics, for example), except in ways that would apply if it occurred in the main text. Several discussions (e.g. this one ) have failed to reach a consensus on whether "stage directions" such as (right) or (behind podium) should be in italics, set off with commas, etc.

Unlike alt text, a caption can contain Wiki markup like ''[[Myriapoda]]''. The caption text is placed underneath the picture. Here is the same example again, this time in the context of some colored lorem ipsum dummy text with asterisks (*) showing where the image syntax appears in the text:
The empty string, if there is an explicitly requested Caption and the image type has a visible caption. The image file name if there is no explicitly requested Alt or Caption. This is never a satisfactory option. It is possible to specify the link title text only for images with no visible caption (as described above).
For large amounts of caption text, use text-align:left; to make it left-justified. Alternate text is optional but recommended. See Alternate text for images for hints on writing good alternate text. To have some text to the left of an image, and then some more text below the image, then put in a single <br clear="all">.
