Aerial view of Yuen Long Plain (2016) The Yuen Long Plain, in the northwestern corner of the New Territories, is the largest alluvial plain in Hong Kong.With an area of 144.3 square kilometres (55.7 sq mi), it was formed between the time of the Tang dynasty (618–907) and Song dynasty (960–1279).
The geology of Hong Kong is dominated by igneous rocks (including granitic rocks and volcanic rocks) formed during a major volcanic eruption period in the Mesozoic era. Since 1978, Yuen Long New Town has been built over the original Yuen Long Town, with the New Town being the district centre of the New Territories northwest. Many new facilities, for example the Yuen Long Police Station, the Yuen Long Town Hall, and the Yuen Long Stadium, were built on the lesser developed western side of the Shan Pui River.
