Like many areas in California, prior to being developed, La Cresta was home to native American tribes whose artifacts and remnants can still be found today. Unlike the neighboring cities of Murrieta and Temecula which experienced significant growth in the late 1880s, early 1900s, and throughout the 1990s, La Cresta remained largely undisturbed.
The Crescenta Valley was a pastoral area under the Rancho Tujunga, Rancho San Rafael and Rancho La Cañada land grants during the Spanish and Mexican periods. The first American settler in the valley was Theodore Pickens, who settled at the top of today's Briggs Avenue in 1871.
More than 400 homes were destroyed in La Cañada, La Crescenta, Montrose and Tujunga. Scores of people were killed, and hundreds were left homeless. Entire families were wiped out. Parts of Foothill Boulevard were buried under 12 feet (4 m) of mud, boulders and debris. The mud was deep enough to bury cars completely on Montrose Avenue.
