Zhou Xiaohong (traditional Chinese: 周小紅; simplified Chinese: 周小红; pinyin: Zhōu Xiǎohóng; Wade–Giles: Chou 1 Hsiao 3 hung 2; born Su Pu; [a] August 1, 1920 – September 22, 1957), known professionally as Zhou Xuan (Chinese: 周璇; pinyin: Zhōu Xuán), also romanized as Chow Hsuan (Wade–Giles: Chou 1 Hsüan 2), was a Chinese singer and film actress.
The song was originally sung by Zhou Xuan and first appeared as an accompaniment to the film Three Stars by the Moon (三星伴月), a 1937 film directed by Fang Peilin and produced by the Yihua film company. The film was one of the last silent movies made in China, and the only silent movie Zhou Xuan starred in.
According to the composer He Luting, the director of the film Street Angel found two urban folk ballads from Suzhou he wanted to use on the film, "Crying on the Seventh Seven Day Cycle" (哭七七) and "One Who Knows Me Well" (知心客), which He Luting then adapted to become "Song of the Four Season" (四季歌) and "The Wandering Songstress" respectively.
