Volvo 240 Turbo at the Nürburgring 1985. Despite its non-sporting image, the Volvo 240 was a successful competitor in touring car racing in the 1980s. In 1983 Volvo produced 505 evolution version of the 240 Turbo with a larger turbocharger and other performance modifications.

Introduced in 1988 for the 740 GLE (and later used in the 940/960), The 16-Valve Redblock motors were offered in both a 2.0–litre Turbo (B204FT/GT) and a 2.3–litre 155 PS (114 kW) Naturally aspirated version (B234F). The head was designed for Volvo by either Cosworth or Porsche.

From the 1989 model year a lock-up torque converter was offered which changed the designation to AW70L. This transmission was originally used in the US specification 1982 Volvo 240 with the B21F engine, as well as in 1983 with the B23F engine. The AW70 did not see worldwide usage until 1984 in certain 240 series cars.
The B28 was also used in the Volvo 264/265 and in a rare version of the 240 GLT (244/245 GLT 6) between 1980 and 1983, and in the Volvo 760 between 1982 and 1986. The last version of the PRV engine in a Volvo was the B280, installed in the Volvo 760 from 1987 to 1990 and in the Volvo 780 (all model years).

Volvo designed the SI6 [3] ("short inline 6") straight-six automobile engine for use in 2007 models. An evolution of the company's long-used straight-five Volvo Modular engine, which itself is an evolution of the Volvo B6304 straight-six engine, the SI6 can be mounted transversely for front wheel drive or all wheel drive applications.
