The Federal Building was designed by the local firm Starks and Flanders, who also designed the Elks Tower, the Alhambra Theatre, and the C. K. McClatchy High School. The Sutterville post office operated from 1855 to 1860. [1] Sutterville was the site of Camp Union, a major California Volunteer training camp during the American Civil War. [1] Sutterville is also California Historical Landmark #593. [2] William Land was the mayor of Sacramento from 1898 to 1899. He was the wealthiest man in Sacramento.
He gave land to anyone who would clear it and build a home. In 1859, Freeman suggested that the town be called Woodland, which the post office accepted. [14] On July 5, 1861, the Woodland Post Office was established and Freeman became Postmaster. [15] He lost no time in developing the town by leasing or selling commercial buildings.
