The Caldwell Historic District in Caldwell, Idaho, is an area of approximately four acres in downtown Caldwell along Main Street, South 7th Avenue, South Kimball Avenue, and Arthur Street. Fires in 1884 and in 1896 destroyed businesses in early Caldwell, and brick had become Caldwell's favored building material for downtown structures.

The Idaho Legislature created Canyon County from Ada County in an act approved March 7, 1891, effective at the November 26, 1892, election. Caldwell was established as the county seat. The John C. Rice House is a 2-story, Queen Anne style house constructed in 1896 in the Washington Heights neighborhood, afterwards relocated to 2121 College Ave> of Caldwell, Idaho. [2] The house features an octagonal turret at the south end of a wraparound porch, a gable roof, and (originally) a lava rock foundation. [ 3 ]

[1] [3] Strahorn's wife, Carrie Adell Strahorn, helped to establish the Presbyterian church in Caldwell in 1890 and the College of Idaho in 1891. Among the six properties in the district inventory are the church building (1890) and parsonage (1897).
