The White River National Wildlife Refuge (officially Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge) is a 160,756 acres (650.56 km 2) wildlife refuge located in Desha, Monroe, Phillips, and Arkansas counties in the U.S. state of Arkansas.
Cotter was established in 1905 as a railroad town. The area used a ferry system to cross the vast White River, with the nearest road crossing being 100 miles (160 km) north in Branson, Missouri. The river would rise and fall very quickly, which caused the ferry to be very unreliable.

The White River Bridge is a five-span Warren deck truss bridge located near Beaver, Carroll County, Arkansas. It carries U.S. Route 62 over the White River for 786.90 feet (239.85 m). [ 2 ] Each span is about 128 feet (39 m) in length and is mounted on concrete piers or abutments.
A bridge over the White River was commissioned, and the highway was rerouted onto the new bridge on October 25, 1972, matching its present-day alignment in the Norfork area.
