Grote had suffered from heart issues and died in Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute at St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas, Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said.
After playing for Houston from 1963 to 1964, Grote played for the Mets from 1966 to 1977.
