Catawba Island is an unincorporated community located in the northern portion of the township and the northern portion of the Catawba Island peninsula. The Catawba Island ferry terminal is located within the unincorporated community; the Miller Boat Line runs from the terminal to the Put-in-Bay, Ohio ferry terminal and the Middle Bass, Ohio ferry terminal.
Mouse Island is a seven acre [1] private island located in Lake Erie off the northern tip of Catawba Point in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States, near the city of Sandusky It was formerly named "Ship Island", as denoted on early-19th-Century maps [ 2 ] (and in some late-18th-Century documents). [ 3 ]
Catawba Island State Park is a ten-acre (4.0 ha) public recreation area located on Lake Erie, six miles northeast of Port Clinton, Ohio. Boating, fishing and picnicking are the major activities of the park. The state park, along with the other units in Ohio's Lake Erie state parks group, was established in the early 1950s. [2]
In 1952–1959, as well as 1963, the island held road races around a 3-mile (4.8 km) course. In 2011, the Put-in-Bay Road Races Reunion returned to the island. The temporary road course set up at the Put-in-Bay Airport during the event was a key step in pointing the way to the return of real vintage sports car racing to the island for 2012. [22]
Most of the non-developed area around Lake James is owned by Crescent Communities, a real estate developer founded in the 1960s and formerly a subsidiary of Duke Energy. [ 10 ] In 1999, several bald eagles were found nesting in trees on the northeastern shore of Lake James, stopping housing development in their vicinity. [ 11 ]
They include Kelleys Island, Erie Island, [1] Pelee Island, the Bass Islands, and several others. The majority of these islands are under the sovereignty of the State of Ohio in the United States. Pelee Island is the only major inhabited island within the province of Ontario, while the smaller Middle Island is the southmost point of land in Canada.
