It was first established in 1970 by virtue of Republic Act No. 6148 as a national park that covered an area of 75,445 hectares (186,430 acres) surrounding Mount Iglit and Mount Baco in the interior of Mindoro. [1] The park is the home of the largest remaining population of the critically endangered tamaraw (a small buffalo).
It was first declared as a game refuge and bird sanctuary in 1920 to protect the natural habitat of the endemic Mindoro tamaraw. In 1925, the mountain and its adjacent area of FB Harrison village, Paluan was proclaimed a national park. [3] The park's current designation as a wildlife sanctuary dates to 2000. [4]

The increase in human activity has drastically reduced tamaraw population. By 1966, the tamaraw's range was reduced to three areas: Mount Iglit, Mount Calavite, and areas near the Sablayan Penal Settlement. By 2000, their range was further reduced to only two areas: the Mounts Iglit–Baco National Park and Aruyan. [16]
