  2. Difference between Violet, Magenta, and Purple?

    www.wetcanvas.com/forums/topic/difference-between-violet...

In actual use they are treated as interchangeable. On a color wheel violet is closer to blue and purple is closer to red. On a rainbow, violet is beyond blue on one extreme, just barely visible before you reach ultraviolet (i.e. beyond violet) where our vision ends. Purple and magenta, in a rainbow, don’t exist.

Magenta can mix beautiful mauves and violets when mixed with any of the blues you have while the Dioxazine Violet is just a a violet. Not that is not a good mixing colour but is not so versatile as magenta. Mix for instance Q. Magenta with Prussian blue to see what you are going to get. ( and the rest of your blues too).

Dioxazine purple is great for making a gorgeous range of reddish purples with quinacridone magenta and rose, and blueish purples with ultramarine and pthalo blues. It also makes a useful range of subdued blues with pthalo green. I’m not a proponent of always trying to neutralize colors with mixing complements.

September 27, 2004 at 4:29 pm #1038178. JamieWG. The Rembrandt Permanent Blue Violet is nearly a dead-on match to cobalt violet, but at a lower price, and with higher tinting strength (photos show straight out of the tube thick, spread thin, and tints with white): IIRC, the Rembrandt is a single-pigment, manganese violet.

  7. Quinacridone Purple (PV55) - WetCanvas: Online Living for Artists

The only purple/violet that I have is ultramarine violet deep which is great for mixing but is about as anemic as a watercolor pigment can get. I have maroon perylene but don’t care for the hue. The quin purple will be nice by itself or as a mixer – I think all the quinacridones mix very well and stay intense. Jan

I consider Winsor & Newton’s Permanent Rose 502 (PV19), and Grumbacher’s Thalo Blue (PB15) to be the primary colors of Magenta, and Cyan, respectively. So….it is no wonder that they create a very appropriate, and clean “Purple”, or “Violet” when mixed together–perhaps higher chroma than a single-pigment, tubed Dioxazine would.

  9. Using Violets (or Purples) - WetCanvas: Online Living for Artists

WFMartin. I don’t actually use Violet, or Purple as much as many artists do, and when I do, I use it mainly for dulling other colors in mixtures. I use this in deep shadows, and cast shadows, where the illusion of “Blue”, or “Purple” shadows is appreciated. For this, I use Dioxazine Purple.

Well, as you can see, mixing PG7 + PV23 does give you a blue that leans towards green, and mixes green equally as well as purples. In other words… cyan! I repeated the mixing at home. My PG7 is slightly different in hue, being a bit yellower, and PV23 being much bluer. I did get colors that varied from a deep teal (similar to PB15 + PG7), to ...

  11. Purple Madder - WetCanvas: Online Living for Artists

“verzino violet by MaimeriBlu is the equivalent of Purple Madder by WN” So, if you have a source where you can buy MaimeriBlu paints, you might try their verzino violet color. I use the MaimeriBlu paints in other colors and they are lovely to work with and are artist grade as well. Hope this helps a little. Sylvia
