Zakir Hussain Allarakha Qureshi (9 March 1951 – 15 December 2024) was an Indian tabla player, composer, percussionist, music producer, and film actor. Widely regarded as the greatest tabla player of his generation and one of the greatest percussionists of all time, [1] [2] [3] he was known for bringing Indian classical music to a global audience.

Hussain was a child prodigy, and was touring by the age of twelve. He went to the United States in 1970, embarking on an international career which includes more than 160 concert dates a year. He has composed and recorded many albums and soundtracks, and has received widespread recognition as a composer for his many ensembles and collaborations.

Zakir Hussain was later added on tabla and the name was changed to Shakti (meaning "creative intelligence, beauty, and power." [5]) as the band members wanted a name that “listeners in the West could relate to”. [6] Raghavan didn't stay with the project and TH Vikku Vinayakaram was added on ghatam for the remainder of those Shakti days.
