The name of the product was Etch A Sketch. In the 1950s, a man named W.C Killgallon began working for the Ohio Art Company. The Killgallon family still owns and operates the Ohio Art Company. The final product of the Etch A Sketch was first produced on July 12, 1960 at the Bryan, Ohio factory.

The Ohio Art working name for this new tracing device was “Magic Screen”, but some time between January, 1960 and the product’s introduction in Spring time, the name was changed to Etch A Sketch® or Magic Etch A Sketch® Screen. W. C. Killgallon and Don Dean, Art Director, conceived the trademark, which eventually became world reknown.

The company began in 1926 as an importer and distributor of dry goods and clothing, located in Sam and Beatrice Irwin's house. Later on, the company moved to a warehouse in the west end of Toronto and focused mainly on toys.
