May 26, 2003. #3. Really the only thing that gives you ground clearance are bigger tires. And in order to fit bigger tires you need more lift. Shackles will give you lift but no better ground clearance. A lift will give you better ground clearance in the middle i.e. breakover point and better approach and departure angles.

2016 Ford Explorer Sport. February 17, 2016. #1. Hello everyone! New here, as my username says, coming from the VW Touareg experience. My new 2016 Explorer Sport is just about to arrive (next week hopefully). In the meantime, I'm doing some research in regards of Explorer's ground clearance: every site I checked lists a minimum, but no maximum.

Moderator Emeritus. According to my Ford 4x4 spec book, the stock ground clearance on the 2001 Sport Trac (and all other Explorer's with 235-75-15 tires) is 6.7" under the rear end. A TT and Shackle lift will give you 1.5-2" more under the frame, but the axles don't move. Adding 31's will give you just over 3/4" more clearance under the rear ...

August 19, 2006. #1. I don't own an Explorer, but am considering getting one since it fits my needs. I like to off-road in the deserts and that def requires good clearance and 4x4 capability. One thing that concerns me: it appears that the newer Explorers' ground clearance isn't what it used to be. The 4W independent suspension in the back ...

Thus the clearance with the 17" wheels is .25 (1/4) inches lower. FYI, the sidewall height on the OEM tire is 5.01 inches and on the 17" base tire it is 6.26 inches. The sidewall height makes up for the difference in wheel size. I was hoping and (could use) a bit more ground clearance myself.

Robb is correct in saying bigger tires is the only way increase ground clearance. Your 97 should be able to run 31" tires with no problem. I ran 31's on my 97 with no torsion twist or shackles. If they rub then do the torsion bar twist and Warrior shackles lift. To run 33's you would either need a suspension lift or a body lift.

Was doing some research on line was looking at Rangers GC and saw that '03-'05 have 10" but everything from '86-'02 and '06-present have about 7.5". What is the difference in the technique from one year to the next? I wanted to get an idea of what the Explorer had against it to only have 6.7"
