GMRS is the best SHTF radio choice. Roughly 8 years ago I took my tech and general tests to get my ham license. At the time it was a mixture of two things, one was to find something to do with my grandfather who is a hard man to warm up to, the other was to find ways to use radio for SHTF purposes.

And a 12 volt low power ham cube transceiver that also receives the in between frequencies from 1-30Mhz. And a 12 volt solar panel briefcase to power it during the daytime.

The short answer is that you'll only be able to talk line of sight to the International Space Station, and that would be on the Amateur VHF bands. The next closest option with a handheld over 100 miles is when you are within the footprint of a passing ham satellite.

TRI PRC-152 Handheld radio. It appears to be real. It has the same frequency options as the BaoFeng/Wouxun radios but a youtube video shows a guy running water over it in a sink. Made for the airsoft guys, it is a big radio (1.75 lbs). Too bad they are $250.00 each.

While operating portable, don't expect much from a radio that needs a 9 foot ground plane and doesn't have one. if it offers an option for an external ...

Scanners are better for monitoring multiple frequencies, but the radio does most of what I need. Unfortunately more and most law enforcement is using encryption these days so not a lot to learn there. It is good for listening to other emergency services or other coordination of events giving on around you.

Check out Grundig or Eton as they both have cheaper and more expensive versions of radios. I have a solar Eton and a wind up Grundig. I like them both. TacomaJPP. Reply Like. S.

In simplex mode, 2 to 7 miles, depending on terrain, foliage and conditions. Mountain top to mountain top is much better. The UV5x3 is a tri band and runs around fifty bucks. It will give you 1.25m, 70cm and 2m. The BF-F8HP is a 70cm/2m but will give you 8 watts instead of 5. It runs around 60 bucks on Btech's Amazon page.

What someone needs really depends on their situation. But there should be something. People today rely completely on gizmos to get things done. You should expect PSHTF there will be no cells, Blackberry's, iPods or anything like it. The people with radios would be the only ones talking.
