Dinkum is pretty similar! It's a town building game. You do have far more creative control in general when it comes to terraforming, and the world is way bigger. There's no 500+ cute villagers to recruit to your island, but there are NPCs to befriend to have them move to your island to build your town. It's a really solid game.
The game also features crafting, mining, fishing, cooking, farming and friendships like Animal Crossing. Quick question: I downloaded the Bowser's Fury repack two days ago to try out Yuzu, and it ran great on my PC so I snooped around for Animal Crossing and been playing nonstop for the last two days, but without 1.7.0 or the DLCs. If I download and install this repack, can I keep my (1.6.0) save somehow or will I have to start over?

Though Animal Crossing will take you a year to see everything, personally it's better than you quickly getting bored by the same events cycling by for the 20th time in a month (or two) in other games (ie Stardew Valley). Only big drawback to animal crossing imo is that interacting is mostly limited to just turning things on and off.
