Doctors' Hospital was founded in 1964 by a group of 18 family practice doctors who were frustrated by a medical system that required them to turn their patients over to specialists when the patients needed to be treated at a hospital. Brainard was the president and professor of surgery at Rush from its founding until his death at age 54 of cholera, a subject he had lectured on a few hours before he himself succumbed to the disease.
