Bethel Military Academy was a school near Warrenton, Virginia in Fauquier County. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It operated from 1867 until 1911 [ 3 ] and had several prominent alumni. The Virginia General Assembly passed a bill in 1901 incorporating the school.

Both before and after it opened, Bethel was a center of Methodism in central Kentucky. It hosted a return visit by Asbury in 1792 (during which time he advocated for its support), and the Kentucky Conference met at the school in 1797. The school was frequently in competition with Transylvania Academy, then a Presbyterian school. [5]: 172–173

The society was founded as the Bethel Historical Society on May 31, 1966 at a meeting at the Bethel Library Association. Eighteen individuals gathered for that first meeting, including Eva Bean, the author of East Bethel Road, [2] who became the secretary and is considered by the society to be its founder.
