The terms "job" and "task" are commonly used interchangeably to mean a specific work assignment. Examples of work assignments include "operating a grinder," "using a pressurized water extinguisher" or "changing a flat tire." Each of these tasks have different safety hazards that can be highlighted and fixed by using the job safety analysis.
It has been estimated that worldwide there are more than 350,000 workplace fatalities and more than 270 million workplace injuries annually. [2] In 2000 there were approximately 2.9 billion workers worldwide. Occupational injuries resulted in the loss of 3.5 years of healthy life for every 1,000 workers.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) establishes enforceable standards to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses. [2] In the EU, a similar role is taken by EU-OSHA . Occupational hazard, as a term signifies both long-term and short-term risks associated with the workplace environment.
The analysis method affects the type of filter used. For gravimetric analysis , non- hygroscopic materials are selected because their masses are less affected by changes in humidity. For microscopy, cellulose ester or polycarbonate membranes are preferred as the former can be rendered transparent, while the latter have a smooth collection surface.
