St. Mary's on the Flats, originally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, [1]: 34–35 [2]: 8 was the first Catholic church building in Cleveland, Ohio.The location where the church once stood can be found, in an 1881 atlas, [3] at the south-east corner of Columbus Ave. and then Girard Ave. on the east bank of the Cuyahoga river in the flats.

St. Mary's was established first as a mission of St. Raymond's Church [1] around 1866. The Rev. Patrick O'Sullivan established St. Mary's as a parish in 1886. [1] In 1914, it was reported that the parishioners numbered 1,100 and that the church property, which included the school, was valued at $50,000, with a debt of $12,000. [1]

It was designed by Henry William Inwood as a chapel of ease for St Pancras Old Church (which resumed being a parish in its own right in 1852) and built between 1824 and 1827 by I. T. Seabrook. [1] A Parliamentary grant paid for the construction, though local taxation funded the purchases of the chapel's interior decoration and the site itself.
