The House of Billung was a dynasty of Saxon noblemen in the 9th through 12th centuries. [1] The first known member of the house was Count Wichmann, mentioned as a Billung in 811. Oda, the wife of Count Liudolf, oldest known member of the Liudolfing House, was also a Billung as was Matilda of Ringelheim.

Hermann Billung (900 or 912 – 27 March 973) was the margrave of the Billung March from 936 until his death. The first of the Saxon House of Billung , Hermann was a trusted lieutenant of Emperor Otto I .
Liudger (also Liutger, Ludiger, Liudiger or Luderus, Low German: Lüder; died 26 February 1011) was the younger brother of the Saxon Duke Bernhard I of the Billung dynasty. In the historical sources Liudger is called Graf (count). There he appears almost only at the side of his older brother.

Swanehilde was born between 945 and 955 as a daughter of Herman, Duke of Saxony, Margrave of the Billung March and Oda. In 970, she married Thietmar I (died 979) Margrave of Meissen. They had the following issue: Gero II (970/975 - 1015), Graf im Hassegau and Markgraf der Lausitz who died in battle against the Poles.
He was thus of the elder line of the Billung family. His nickname derives from the fact that he lost an eye in battle, an injury for which he blamed Otto I and which partly explains his involvement in many insurrections. He was the count of Hastfalagau. He sided with Liudolf, Duke of Swabia, in his rebellion in 953–954.
Otto was the younger son of the Saxon count Liudolf (d. 866), the progenitor of the dynasty, and his wife Oda (d. 913), [1] daughter of the Saxon princeps Billung.Among his siblings were his eldest brother Bruno, heir to their father's estates, and Liutgard, who in 876 became Queen of East Francia as consort of the Carolingian king Louis the Younger.
