The part of Wisconsin that Waukesha County occupies was a part of Michigan Territory when Milwaukee County was organized in September 1834. [6] On July 4, 1836, the Wisconsin Territory was formed, which included land that is now in the state of Minnesota. [6] In January 1846, part of Milwaukee County was split off into Waukesha County.
It presently covers all of Washington and Jefferson counties, most of Waukesha County, and portions of Dodge, Milwaukee and Walworth counties. It is currently represented by Republican Scott Fitzgerald. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of R+14, it is the most Republican district in Wisconsin. [2]
The 13th district was drawn somewhat in line with the western half of the previous Milwaukee County 18th district, though with some city of Milwaukee wards removed, and the village of Butler in Waukesha County added. [6] The district has remained in the same vicinity since 1972, but the boundaries have moved further and further west.
The county with the least population is Menominee County with 4,226 residents; the Menominee Indian Reservation is co-extensive with the county. [2] Pepin County is the smallest in area, with 231.98 square miles (600.8 km 2 ); Marathon is the largest, having 1,544.91 square miles (4,001.3 km 2 ).
