Ruth's death is the last straw for the Congregation, which closes the mission. The remaining nuns leave just as the monsoon season begins, even earlier than Mr Dean had originally predicted. Mr Dean meets the caravan to say goodbye. Clodagh and Mr Dean clasp hands and share a meaningful look, but Clodagh gathers herself and continues on her way.
He calls again a few days later when another ailment is reported — this time "crackerdog". James visits Mr Dean and his 13-year-old dog, Bob, which has developed a cancerous growth in his abdomen. James decides it is best to put the animal down. Dean later gets a puppy and names it after his recent departure.
With tensions reaching a climax, Ruth renounces her oath and flees the mission school. After Dean rebuffs her, Ruth attacks Clodagh at the bell tower but falls to her death. The nuns abandon the mission. Following Ruth's burial, Clodagh reveals her true name to Dean, whom she has feelings for.
